Are ILIA products made with natural or synthetic ingredients?

All of our products are a hybrid of natural and organic ingredients, active botanicals, and safe synthetics. We have always used safely selected synthetic ingredients and look to a multitude of research and consult with chemistry and regulatory experts to inform which ones are proven to be safest for humans and the environment.

We are committed to transparency so we disclose all ingredients and derivatives in our ingredient lists, which is not a requirement in the U.S. All ILIA products are free of Parabens, Phthalates, Sulfates, and Talc among many other substances. We will continue to educate further on why we believe not every natural ingredient is good for the skin, and not every synthetic is bad.

Are ILIA products gluten-free?

The following ILIA Beauty products are certified gluten-free:
  • Balmy Days
  • Balmy Nights (discontinued)
  • Multi-Sticks
  • Radiant Translucent Powder SPF 20 (discontinued)
  • Soft Focus Finishing Powder
All other ILIA Beauty products are formulated without gluten, but the reason we cannot say that they're certified gluten-free is that they're not produced in a certified gluten-free manufacturing environment. They may not have any gluten-derived ingredients in the formula, but they may contain traces of gluten due to the nature of our manufacturing processes.

You can check out our certified gluten-free products here:

Is ILIA cruelty-free?

Yes, we are cruelty-free because we do not test on animals. We are Leaping Bunny certified and do not sell in countries where animal testing is required. This has always been the case and will continue to be our status indefinitely.

Are all ILIA Beauty products vegan?

Not only are ILIA Beauty products cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny certified, but all except 6 of our products are vegan as well. The only ingredient we use that is not vegan is beeswax, which is ethically sourced and no bees were harmed in the making of those products. For our mascara, the beeswax is produced in Europe and they work with local suppliers to supply the beeswax. More often than not, you have to have natural or synthetic beeswax when creating a mascara with a more natural formula. Synthetic beeswax always contains mineral oil, so we chose to forego it. Our manufacturer guarantees that the beeswax is organic and sustainably harvested. Europe has much stricter laws than the U.S. in this regard. You can check out our vegan products here: https://iliabeauty.com/en-ca/collections/vegan

Non-vegan products are below:

  • Limitless Lash Mascara
  • Fullest Volumizing Mascara
  • Balmy Tint Hydrating Lip Balm
  • Lip Wrap Hydrating Mask
  • Multi-Sticks
  • Balmy Days

Are ILIA Beauty products soy-free?

Most ILIA Beauty products are soy-free. The products listed below do have trace amounts of Hydrogenated Lecithin, which is a soy derivative. It is so minimal that we have not had any reports of reactions from people with allergies. That being said, we cannot guarantee that it wouldn’t cause a reaction if the allergy is severe as everyone is different!

  • True Skin Serum Foundation
  • True Skin Serum Concealer
  • Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40
  • Liquid Light Serum Highlighter
  • Essential Brow Gel
  • Balmy Nights
  • Color Haze
  • True Skin Radiant Priming Serum
  • Skin Rewind Complexion Stick

Are ILIA Beauty products dairy-free?

ILIA Beauty certifies that based on our ingredient suppliers’ documents, our facility does not use any dairy-derived ingredients in the manufacture of ILIA’s finished goods products. We do use Lactic Acid in other formulations, but this ingredient is sourced from non-dairy ingredients, i.e. plant-based.

All in all, we cannot claim to be a 100% dairy-free facility since it is not always a guarantee that the supplier chain is completely free of dairy. All we can do is go based on the Food Allergen statements the ingredient suppliers provide to us and do our due diligence with the cleaning/sanitization process, where we ensure to clean and sanitize all equipment used from a previous production run before proceeding to the next project in both compounding and filling phases.

Is ILIA fragrance-free?

Most ILIA Beauty products are free of synthetic and natural fragrances except for the below-

Our Color Block High Impact Lipsticks and Balmy Tint Hydrating Lip Balm contain synthetic fragrance at less than 2%.  Additionally, our Balmy Nights, Balmy Gloss, Blue Light Face Mist, Color Haze, and Lip Wrap Hydrating Mask contain natural fragrance.

Are ILIA Beauty products certified organic?

ILIA Beauty products are not certified organic (only the ingredients that are listed) as our organic percentages do vary, and in the U.S. there is not a lot of monitoring on ingredients going into products or their origin.

We are very thankful that we have done the legwork to sell abroad and have everything reviewed which ensures our vendors and their certificates are up to date. We are registered in the European Union whereby we must submit every ingredient document for review before being approved to sell. We must also list all trace elements and allergens when selling in the EU and have decided to change all of our ingredient lists globally to reflect this and be fully transparent.

Does ILIA use Tocopherol?

ILIA Beauty's tocopherol is naturally derived from pressed flowers (Vitamin E).

Does ILIA use preservatives?

Yes, the only preservative ILIA Beauty uses is Phenoxyethanol. Phenoxyethanol is an organic compound that is a mild alcohol derived from flowers. It is used as a natural preservative in place of other preservatives such as parabens. Any alcohol content will evaporate immediately when applied to the skin. You will find Phenoxyethanol in only one of our products: Clean Line Liquid Liner.

What are the active ingredients in ILIA Beauty's SPF products?

ILIA Beauty uses a combination of Titanium Dioxide and Non-Nano Zinc Oxide for a 100% natural SPF.

We use SPF in the following products:

Does ILIA test for heavy metals?

ILIA Beauty is involved with every touchpoint, starting at the raw material level. Our internal quality standard for lead is 5 ppm (10 ppm is considered a trace level), which is more restrictive than what is regulated. Lead analysis is carried out on all products through our labs and overseen by us. Moreover, we are incredibly selective about the raw materials we use in our formulas, and they follow global standards and regulations.

We also would like to share that every material we use, or any cosmetic brand uses, comes with documents. One is called a Certificate of Analysis and the other is a Material Safety Data Sheet. Many natural ingredients will contain trace amounts of minerals and heavy metals as many of the ingredients come from the earth. These documents are reviewed by an external regulatory team in the U.S. and a responsible person for the European Union to ensure they meet not only international requirements but ours as well.

We also test for 1ppm for Mercury; 3ppm for cadmium and arsenic; and 5ppm for lead and antimony.

Does ILIA Beauty use dyes in their products?

ILIA Beauty uses small percentages of synthetics in our products from the very beginning and we're happy to share why -- Food Grade dye is a synthetic form of color and the choice to use Food Grade Dye was chosen when formulating certain shades to obtain a stronger hue. The majority of the product is made up of natural mineral dyes, yet some do contain low percentages (2% or less) of food-grade dye.

The FDA has put all approved colorants through rigorous testing to make sure that they're safe for us to use and testing is always ongoing. All dye batches made for the FD&C and D&C have to be tested to meet the minimum purity standards, and the EU has a list of approved synthetic dyes for cosmetic use. At ILIA, we only formulate with dyes that are approved both in the U.S. and the EU (as well as in other markets we sell into). For pigmented formulations, ILIA Beauty tests the content of heavy metals in the final formula to ensure they are below our internally established heavy metal limits.

What is mica in makeup?

ILIA Beauty uses ethically sourced Mica, which is a mineral that gives certain products a shimmer or glow. We work closely with our sources to ensure our values are upheld. Many of our suppliers are domestic, European, or with known sources in Southeast Asia.

To ensure ethical practices are in place, we ask each of our manufacturers for certificates from their suppliers.
